Innovation rarely follows the rulebook. At Apex, that’s been our advantage. In our latest Shop Talk, we explored the engineering behind the Z Series and our new Stratified™ concepts. Here’s a slightly different take on that conversation — one that highlights how a contrarian, performance-first decision made our Z waterfowl loads measurably better.
The problem we set out to solve
Steel shot has long carried an unfair reputation: reliable and inexpensive, yes — but often pegged as “entry level” when hunters want the best non-toxic performance. We didn’t accept that binary. Instead, we asked: what if a tiny strategic change to the payload could unlock much better performance without compromising durability or cost?
The reversal: turning a conventional blend on its head
Our ballistic team tried something different: we reversed our traditional WS waterfowl blend approach. Rather than starting with steel and trying to boost it, we began with a TSS-dominant payload and added a pinch of zinc-plated steel. That small, intentional addition flipped performance in a useful way.
What that tiny pinch actually does
By incorporating a small percentage of zinc-plated steel into a predominantly TSS (tungsten super shot) payload, we achieved multiple gains simultaneously:
The real result: cleaner kills, fewer cripples
Numbers matter, but so do outcomes. In field tests, the Z Series TSS-dominant loads with a steel pinch produced improved pellet dispersion and more lethal patterns across realistic hunting distances. That means better knockdown power, fewer cripples, and a more consistent result—not just on paper but at the blind.
Why this matters to the modern hunter
We don’t chase novelty. We chase measurable advantage. By rethinking the blend from first principles and using an unconventional mix strategy, the Z Series gives hunters a practical step up in performance—especially in scenarios where pattern efficiency and downrange lethality decide the outcome.
